Sun, Moon and Rising: Your Big Three in Astrology

In astrology, your “Big Three” are your Sun sign, Moon sign and Rising sign. Together they form the core of your personality and explain why you may not feel like a typical member of your Sun sign.

Sun sign: who you are

Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on your birthday, the one you read in horoscopes. It represents your core identity, vitality and life purpose: the person you are growing into. Find your Sun sign.

Moon sign: what you feel

Your Moon sign describes your emotional nature, instincts and what you need to feel safe. It often shows up most in private, with family and close partners. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so you need your birth date and time to know it.

Rising sign: how you meet the world

Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It shapes first impressions, your style and your instinctive approach to life. It changes about every two hours, so an accurate birth time is essential.

How the three work together

Think of it like this: your Sun is the driver, your Moon is the passenger who tells you how the ride feels, and your Rising sign is the car everyone sees from the outside. A Leo Sun with a Cancer Moon and Virgo Rising will express Leo energy very differently from a Leo with an Aries Moon and Sagittarius Rising.
