The 12 Houses in Astrology Explained

The twelve houses divide your birth chart into twelve areas of life. If planets are the actors and signs are their costumes, the houses are the stages where each part of your life plays out.

How houses work

Your houses are calculated from your exact birth time and place, starting from your Ascendant, which marks the beginning of the 1st house. A planet in a house brings its energy to that area of life, and the sign on each house’s cusp shows your style in that area.

The meaning of each house

1st house: self, appearance, first impressions and how you start things
2nd house: money, possessions, self-worth and values
3rd house: communication, learning, siblings, neighbors and short trips
4th house: home, family, roots and your inner foundation
5th house: creativity, romance, pleasure, play and children
6th house: daily routines, work, health and service
7th house: partnerships, marriage, contracts and open enemies
8th house: intimacy, shared money, transformation, death and rebirth
9th house: travel, higher education, philosophy, faith and publishing
10th house: career, public reputation, ambition and legacy
11th house: friends, community, groups and future hopes
12th house: the subconscious, solitude, spirituality and hidden matters

Empty houses

Almost everyone has some houses with no planets in them. An empty house doesn’t mean that area of life is missing; it just isn’t a main focus. Look at the sign on the house cusp and its ruling planet to read it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see my houses in Soul Energy Insight?

Yes. Your free chart shows the house of every planet and point, and each one comes with a short reading of what it means for you.

Why do I need my birth time for houses?

Houses depend on the Ascendant, which changes about every two hours. Without a birth time, house positions can be wrong.
